Gestational Diabetes: Prevention and Control

Learn all about gestational diabetes, glucose testing, and how to protect your health and your baby's health.

Gestational Diabetes: Prevention and Control

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes diagnosed for the first time during pregnancy that affects how your cells use glucose (sugar).

Due to normal placental hormones, some insulin resistance is generated. If the maternal body does not produce enough insulin to compensate, blood sugar levels rise, which can lead to complications if left unmonitored.

Timely Screening and Management

  • 01.

Glucose Tolerance Test: The gold standard study. Ideally performed between weeks 24 and 28 of gestation via blood samples drawn before and after drinking a sugary beverage.

  • 02.

Management through diet and exercise: The vast majority of patients maintain perfect glucose levels simply by adjusting their meal plan and doing daily walks.

  • 03.

Risks of unmanaged diabetes: Can cause macrosomia (very large babies with birth difficulties), premature delivery, or immediate neonatal hypoglycemia.

A Healthy Baby and Controlled Pregnancy

With timely diagnosis in Reynosa and proper metabolic monitoring, your pregnancy will progress normally, achieving a safe delivery at the ideal term.

If you have a family history of diabetes or overweight, it is critical to perform an early screening during your first trimester.
